Another challenge that I faced in learning this song was the size of the chords. the song is a fast pace so having to stretch my hand into all sorts of straining portions while maintaining the rhythm was very difficult. The intro and the verse only use two chords (Eb Major and F minor) and they pretty much maintain the same rhythm on both hands. Once I got comfortable enough with the intro and the verse and I was able to play it from memory without mess ups I moved onto learning the prechorus and the chorus. It helped chunking out my learning in this way because I was able to develop some confidence and comfort with the song on the less challenging parts before moving into the more challenging components. With HD piano I was able to slow the song down and play along which really helped in the learning process – especially when tackling the chorus (which was THE most difficult aspect of the song. When learning the prechorus and the chorus it helped to break it down by one hand at a time before practising putting them together. I had to break my learning sessions up a lot too over many days because otherwise I would get frustrated when I was practising for too long and still struggling. So I would practice until I got frustrated and then I would take a break and come back to it the next day when I was feeling refreshed and composed again. I’m really happy with what I accomplished. When I was first deciding on a song I discovered this one and at first told myself I wouldn’t be able to do it. However, I took a leap of faith and stayed committed and determined throughout the learning process and am very happy with my final product. The last challenge in this learning journey was definitely trying to sing on top of everything. Because it takes a lot of focus and attention just to play the song alone without adding the extra component of trying to sing. I love singing and Amy Winehouse has always been an artist who’s voice and music has inspired me so I was really happy that I was able to play one of her creations in my own way. I’m excited to continue learning the piano over the summer and even just throughout my life and get to a place where I’m comfortable playing any song and can incorporate this instrument into my future classroom.
